What Is Thermal Spraying


Thermal spraying technology is one of the most effective surface modification techniques in the field of surface engineering. According to GB/T 18719-2002 “Thermal Spraying Terminology and Classification,” the definition of thermal spraying is: the method in which the spraying material is heated to a plastic or softened state inside or outside the spray gun, then sprayed onto the pre-treated surface of the substrate, essentially maintaining its unmelted state to form a coating. Thermal spraying imparts special functions to the substrate surface.

With the development of related technologies, various thermal spraying techniques have emerged. Modern thermal spraying technology has expanded beyond just the “thermal” aspect. The formation of coatings now includes not only solid-phase deposition but also gas-phase deposition or deposition involving all three phases: solid, liquid, and gas.

Recently developed cold gas dynamic spraying technology involves completely solid-phase deposition; PS-PVD (Plasma Spray Physical Vapor Deposition), LPPS (Low Pressure Plasma Spray) ultra-low pressure plasma spraying technology can achieve gas-phase deposition or solid, liquid, and gas-phase deposition. These technologies complement and expand the scope of thermal spraying, becoming important components of modern thermal spraying techniques. Thermal spraying technology is a rapidly developing high-tech field, and some coating preparation processes have been incorporated into advanced manufacturing technology lists.
